Prerequisite: LASP 234 and LASP 252; or consent of instructor In this course, students engage in critical reflection about speaking, learning and teaching Spanish in the United States. Topics covered may include the history and current status of the Spanish language in the US; Spanish-speaking communities' experiences with linguistic assimilation and education in the US; the role of immigration and politics in mainstream perceptions of Spanish; myths and facts about bilingualism; as well as sociolinguistic and literacy aspects of Spanish in the US (including Spanglish). By engaging with these topics in seminar-style discussions conducted in Spanish, students will improve their Spanish proficiency and learn to articulate the value of Spanish to themselves and others. Offered annually.
