Prerequisite: SPED 570 with a minimum grade of "B" This course focuses on the use of single subject research designs used to study human behavior. Students will learn about the major single subject designs and the strengths and limitations of each design. The underlying rationale for single subject designs and strategies and tactics for optimizing experimental control will be reviewed. Students will learn how to accurately analyze and interpret research data from a variety of single subject experiments. Related issues relevant to identifying functional relations among environmental and behavioral variables will also be explored. The significance of replication, both within and across participants, will be reviewed. Students will practice applying single subject designs to clinical cases to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. The importance of interobserver agreement and procedural integrity will be reviewed along with formulas for calculating each. Considerations for generalization and maintenance of behavior will be discussed. Single subject designs will be compared and contrasted with group designs, with strengths and limitations of each highlighted. Ethical considerations along with issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion will be embedded throughout the course. This course provides 45 instructional hours toward academic qualifications for Research Methods (measurement, data display, interpretation, single-case designs, intervention and program evaluation, research ethics, etc.) required to sit for the behavior analysis certification (BCBA) examination.
