FullCourseDesc
Prerequisite: PHYS 416 with a minimum grade of "C-" This course focuses on the matrix approach to Quantum Mechanics with an emphasis on contemporary two-level systems that reveal and exploit quantum superposition and entanglement. Two-level systems form the basis of a new
generation of quantum technologies such as quantum computers, sensors, quantum networks and quantum information. A vector space approach is used to bridge classical and quantum spaces and to construct the eigenvector/state quantum matrix formalism. The Bloch sphere is covered for qubit states and density matrices are used to work with pure and mixed states. Bell states are used for fundamental tests that are then demonstrated in our labs. Symbolic algebra systems computation is emphasized, and introductory quantum algorithms are developed and run on open-source quantum computers. Offered alternate years.
