Prerequisite: PHYS 244 with a minimum grade of "C-" Quantitative Astronomy is an intermediate-level course that provides a technical introduction to the modern science of astronomy using the tools of calculus-based physics. Topics include a survey of astronomical tools and methods; the physics of radiation and matter interactions; Solar System structure, formation and membership; exoplanets; the properties of the sun and stars; the structure and properties of stellar atmospheres and interiors; star formation; stellar evolution; the Milky Way galaxy; and properties of other galaxies. Offered fall semester.
