Prerequisite: Admission to the Professional Education Program This course will develop sound knowledge and understanding of professional skills for beginning special educators. Skills addressed include applications of the legal processes in special education, including writing Individualized Education Programs (IEP) with transition planning elements when appropriate. Further, teacher candidates develop well-structured lessons with challenging tasks and measurable outcomes that employ UDL principles for whole class, small group and individual instruction, developing 504 plans, designing strategies for progress monitoring, integrating regulations for state and federal laws in special education, collaboration models implemented in inclusive and sub-separate settings, supervising paraprofessionals, promoting family engagement and designing linkages with community agencies. Applications of alternative and augmentative technologies are emphasized. A 20 hour pre-practicum experience is required. Offered fall and spring semester.
