Prerequisite: PHYS 438 In this course, students will understand the underlying physics, actual application and potential uses of nonlinear effects in optical and photonics devices. Topics covered in this course include the Manley-Rowe relations, second harmonic generation, frequency mixing, parametric amplification and oscillation as well as telecom challenges with self-phase modulation and spontaneous and stimulated diffusions. Offered alternate years.
