Prerequisite: MUSC 282 This course examines the defining sounds and cultural movements that shape American identity. Students will trace pre-Colonial Indigenous musical traditions before investigating the American Revolution, the role of early music in colonial resistance, the evolution of African American spirituals, and the ways American composers both upheld and dismantled the rigid hierarchies of the European concert hall.
