Prerequisite: LASP 200 or consent of instructor; students who are native speakers or proficient Spanish speakers should consider enrolling in this course and should reach out to the department chair for a prerequisite override This introductory course in translation and interpretation is designed to provide English-Spanish-speaking students with the foundational knowledge and language skills necessary for accurate written translation and effective oral interpretation. It focuses on developing, improving, and expanding students’ abilities to transfer meaning between English and Spanish in both written and spoken contexts.
The course covers a range of topics including, but not limited to, Spanish grammar review, ethical considerations in translation and interpretation, key translation strategies, modes of interpretation (such as sight translation and consecutive interpreting), and the development of cultural competence. Students will also build proofreading, editing, and listening/speaking skills essential to professional practice.
Ample practice will be provided in general, legal, medical, business, and literary translation, as well as in introductory interpretation exercises that simulate real-world scenarios. Students will work with a variety of reference materials, online dictionaries, and professional tools and resources to strengthen accuracy, fluency, and confidence in bilingual communication.
