This course introduces students to the theoretical and scientific foundations of audio. Students will learn to distinguish objective measurements of frequency response, dynamic range, wavelength, period, frequency, signal to noise ratio, headroom, noise floor and other measurements. Students will then apply this knowledge to modern recording equipment in the lab. Signal flow will be covered through the language of block diagrams and its application to audio systems. The class will survey audio transmission, manipulation and delivery systems including cables, connectors, basic stereo mixers, microphones, amplifiers and loudspeakers. In addition, students will develop a vocabulary of common definitions, concepts and expressions. Students will develop a working knowledge of Pro Tools audio systems. Offered fall and spring semesters.
