Prerequisite: ANTH 100 or ANTH 206 or consent of instructor This course explores the opportunities and challenges faced by Indigenous peoples in the United States and Canada today. It focuses on issues related to land and natural-resource harvesting; tribal recognition and governance; poverty and social problems within and outside reservations; interactions with governmental agencies, international organizations and multinational corporations; and ethnic discrimination. It also addresses the ongoing changes in the Native responses, including confrontational and peaceful activism; the recent revival of Native traditional spirituality; and the pros and cons of economic development, including casino gambling.
