Prerequisite: SPED 202 or SPED 211 with minimum grade of " B-" This course examines the characteristics and instructional implications of students with moderate reading disability in the context of typical reading development and reviews appropriate classroom interventions. Specifically, this course focuses on the reading process and how children learn to read: instructional strategies, informal reading assessment; the role of physical and cognitive disabilities in learning to read; the roles of culture, second language learning, and environment in learning to read; and controlled texts and authentic children's literature. A field-based pre-practicum experience is required. Offered fall and spring semester. (Formerly SPED 204)
