Prerequisite: ENGL 203 and ENGL 223 This course examines the writings of authors such as Samuel Richardson, Frances Burney, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Olaudah Equiano and Jane Austen. We will consider how literary modes such as sentimentalism and the Gothic participate in and respond to major intellectual, social, scientific, political and cultural developments of the Enlightenment period.
