This course focuses on the application of theories of cognitive, social, emotional, language and physical development to teaching adolescents. Students will first develop a basic understanding of human growth and development during the early childhood and elementary school years, as a foundation for the focus on adolescent development. Students will develop an understanding of the complex factors that help to shape the physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development during the adolescent years. Students will explore the implications for teaching and learning in middle and high school classrooms. Concepts will be considered in the context of current research, societal trends and educational policy and practices. Offered fall, spring, summer.
