Meaghan was born and raised in Rome but knew of 91Ƶ because of her father. When it came time to pick a college, she traveled to the United States to tour the school and fell in love with the campus.

“At times over the past four years it was tough being away from my parents, but it did help me build character and my professors were amazing. I had support,” she said.

Her parents crossed the Atlantic Ocean to cheer on their daughter during the 185th commencement ceremonies held at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on May 15. Some 1,500 graduates took part in two undergraduate ceremonies, many grateful for their own support systems.

First-generation graduate Josiah Severe earned his biology degree during the morning ceremonies. His mom, dad, grandmother, siblings and others sat proudly in the stands cheering him on.

“We are a loud family,” he joked. “It feels great to have them here. The journey is better when you’re not alone.”

Josiah is among the 45 percent of 91Ƶ students who are the first in their immediate families to go to college, and President Frederick W. Clark Jr., ’83, addressed them in his message to graduates.

“Thank you for your courage in blazing a trail of higher education success within your families and communities,” Clark said. “For first-gen students, which includes me, walking across this stage is not only a hard-earned milestone in life, but now, you are powerful examples to be followed by others in your life.”

91Ƶ awarded honorary doctorates to three exemplary leaders, including Massachusetts Sen. Michael J. Rodrigues. Speaking to morning graduates, Rodrigues said it was his own family’s influence that inspired him to pursue higher education.

“I was the first in my family to graduate. I am a product of hardworking, immigrant family who had a dream for a better life for their children,” he said.

Former 91Ƶ Trustee Davede Alexander told afternoon graduates that their true character is expressed when no one is watching.

“You’re graduating today not just with a degree, but with a behavioral trait and this is always placing human dignity first,” he said.

In a second speech to afternoon grads, former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker urged them to learn from everyone around them – even those who are highly critical of their work. Baker recounted how, after losing a political campaign, he asked for honest feedback from journalists and political commentators. Their advice made him a stronger candidate in his eventual winning campaign for governor.

For Baker, the lessons that made him successful also came from much closer to home.

“My mom was a Democrat and my dad was a Republican and they taught me it’s not that hard to love those you don’t always agree with,” said Baker, who was known for his bipartisanship and now serves as president of the NCAA.

Morning student speaker Morgan Ranucci similarly acknowledged the importance of family support.

“Behind every graduate sitting here today are people who stood beside us along the way,” the biology major said. “Not just as graduates of a university, but as graduates of perseverance.”

In her message to afternoon graduates, English major Julianna Sances encouraged her classmates to rely on kindness in the inevitable moments when life won’t go their way.

“When you’re feeling like you’ve failed because you didn’t get the job, or the trophy, or the praise, please know that if you remain kind and just plain good, you will never ever fail,” she said.

That strong sense of kindness permeates the 91Ƶ campus and makes it feel like one giant family, said Haley Audette, who earned a degree in social work and childhood studies.

As she prepared to process into the ceremony, Haley – who will return to Bridgewater for graduate school – reflected on the roommate who became one of her closest friends and the 91Ƶ faculty and staff who have supported her throughout college.

“I’m really excited to be at this moment and say that I made it,” she said. “I wouldn’t have wanted to do it at any other school.”

No

<picture> <img loading="lazy" srcset="/sites/bridgew/files/styles/article_featured_image_max_470/public/media/article_featured_image/img_0418.jpeg 470w, /sites/bridgew/files/styles/article_featured_image_max_705/public/media/article_featured_image/img_0418.jpeg 705w" sizes="(max-width: 767px) 100vw, (min-width: 768px) 33vw" src="/sites/bridgew/files/styles/article_featured_image_max_470/public/media/article_featured_image/img_0418.jpeg" alt="A graduate dances in the aisle as others cheer her on enthusiastically. I’m excited for my family to see me.”

Isabella is one of approximately 380 students who earned degrees from the College of Graduate Studies on Thursday evening. Accompanied by the cheers of family and friends, graduates proudly crossed the stage, receiving a diploma and a special hood that commemorates their advanced degrees.

“No matter how many sleepless nights or Dunkin’ runs – yes, Dunkin’ runs – you put in the work when no one was watching,” said Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell, the commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. “You believed in yourself.”

Campbell reflected on the immense tragedy she experienced as a child, including the loss of her mother and father. Yet, guided by her faith and the teachers and community members who believed in her, Campbell went to Princeton and UCLA and became the first Black woman to serve as Massachusetts’ attorney general.

Graduates, she said, are entering a world marked by economic uncertainty, deep political divisions and global instability. Yet, the Class of 2026 is ready to confront these challenges with fortitude, determination and a resolve to serve others.

“Go forward with courage, go forward with fearlessness, go forward with joy, always remembering you are your best thing,” she said.

In a world filled with complex challenges that demand personal sacrifices, graduates can truly leave their mark by making a difference in others’ lives, President Frederick W. Clark Jr., ’83, said, referencing 91Ƶ’s motto, “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”

“I can’t think of any graduating class I’d rather have leading this charge than the members of this class we celebrate tonight,” Clark said. “After all, you are battle tested, and your journey has made each of you stronger and each of you wiser. You are ready for what comes next.”

Student speaker Noah Downing, who earned a degree in business administration, shared a story about losing his wallet along Rte. 1. Noah had recently talked with Associate Professor Jen Mead, and fortuitously still had her business card in his wallet. A good Samaritan found the wallet and called Dr. Mead, who made the connection to Noah.

Noah saw that twist of fate as a sign to enroll at 91Ƶ, and he has taken advantage of the many opportunities the university provides. He became a graduate assistant in Academic Coaching, where he helped students develop learning and organizational skills; played on the basketball team; and started an on-campus affinity program for student-athletes of color.

“Without losing my wallet, I would have never built the relationships I have on this campus or found my purpose,” said Noah, who now works in the Office of Student Success and Equity. “I truly believe everything happens for a reason and when you move with passion and intention, things have a way of aligning.”

Isabella, who also sang the National Anthem, said she is “super prepared” for her future thanks to “wonderful professors” and “incredible staff.” She teaches high school English at Map Academy in Plymouth and has talked about her education with her students.

“They can’t believe their teacher is a master,” she said. “I tell them, ‘This is going to be you one day. You’re going to have that success and feeling of accomplishment and pride in yourself.’ It’s amazing.”

No

<picture> </picture>

Go forward with courage, go forward with fearlessness, go forward with joy, always remembering you are your best thing

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell

Tags

Class of 2026

Thu, 14 May 2026 23:52:39 +0000 BBENSON@bridgew.edu 5156766 at Through Uncertainty and Setbacks, One 91Ƶ Graduate Found Purpose and Kept Going /stories/2026/through-uncertainty-and-setbacks-one-bsu-graduate-found-purpose-and-kept-going Through Uncertainty and Setbacks, One 91Ƶ Graduate Found Purpose and Kept Going HHARRIS@bridgew.edu <time datetime="2026-05-11T13:07:19-04:00" title="Monday, May 11, 2026 - The first step toward that dream brought her to 91Ƶ, where Morgan majored in biology, with a concentration in pre-medicine and biomedical sciences.

“I fell in love with Bridgewater the very first time I stepped on campus,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. 91Ƶ has helped me grow as a person.”

Morgan will get the chance to share her story and Bridgewater experiences as a student speaker during the morning commencement ceremony on May 15, held at the Xfinity Center in Norton.

“I’m really excited because each of us [graduating] has a story. We all arrived on campus with different backgrounds, different challenges, and different doubts,” she said. “But we kept moving forward, even when we couldn’t fully see where we were going.”

For Morgan, that idea has taken on a literal meaning.

Last year, during the fall semester, her vision suddenly disappeared for a month. She stepped away from classes and shifted to part-time status while doctors worked to stabilize her condition.

“For a moment, the path forward felt uncertain again, but it also reminded me why I started this journey,” Morgan said.

It was her first flare-up in college, and the encouragement she received kept her on track. She met with her professors, who guided her through difficult stretch with understanding and flexibility.

At 91Ƶ, she was also a member of the women’s basketball team.

“I learned how to be part of something, and work towards a common goal; to show up on days I didn’t want to…My coaches really mentored me through my first year,” Morgan said.

When she tore her MCL and her athletic career was over, instead of letting it get her down, she found a new way to get involved by working as a resident advisor. That pivot opened her up to a new social circle and responsibilities.

“I think I’ve learned that, in life, there are always going to be things that knock you down, but the reality is, you don’t have to stay down—you just shift your direction,” Morgan said.

With graduation on the horizon, she feels proud and excited knowing she made it.

“The hard moments? In some ways, they make life better, because it shows you that you are capable of getting through anything and that you can thrive,” Morgan said.

She admits graduating is also bittersweet; it’s difficult to leave a place she’s come to love.

“Bridgewater has been great for me. Not only did it help me develop my purpose, but it also supported my purpose,” Morgan said. “If I were talking to an incoming freshman, I’d tell them that Bridgewater is great because there are so many things here that you can do. As he drove off, he heard a “thud” and didn’t think much of it.

It wasn’t until he stopped to grab a snack that he realized what the noise was: His wallet.

“I rushed back to the gas station, panicking, thinking about all of my credit cards, my ID, everything I’d have to cancel and replace. I was distraught,” Noah said.

Then his phone rang, and an unknown number flashed across the screen. He answered. On the other end was a stranger who had his wallet.

“He asked me if my name was Noah and that he found cards scattered all over Route 1,” Noah said. “But I was confused, like, how did he get my number?”

The answer shocked him, and it’s a story he will share as this year’s student speaker during the May 14 91Ƶ graduate commencement at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield.

Two months before that incident, Noah was working with the nonprofit New England Community Services during a week-long program held at 91Ƶ. While there, he connected with Dr. Jennifer Mead, associate professor of Health Sciences and Kinesiology.

After telling her he was looking to enroll in 91Ƶ’s Master of Business Administration program that fall, she shared the graduate assistant opportunities available and encouraged him to reach out to her.

“That good Samaritan found her card, contacted Dr. Mead, and that’s how he found me,” Noah said. “When he returned my wallet, everything was there, but most importantly, Dr. Mead’s card, which I still have to this day.”

Noah called Dr. Mead to thank her and applied for the graduate assistant opening.

“Since that interaction, Bridgewater has provided me with opportunities I could never have imagined,” he said.

Noah became a graduate assistant in Academic Coaching, where he helped students ages 18 to 65 develop learning and organizational skills. As a graduate student with one year of eligibility left, he joined the men’s basketball team, playing under his brother Michael, who is an assistant coach.

After Noah traveled to Chicago to participate in a networking opportunity at the Black Student-Athlete Summit, he was inspired to start an on-campus affinity program, The Collection.

The group focuses specifically on creating support for male student-athletes of color.

“My goal is to build a community and help ensure student athletes are graduating on time and are supported so they can find their own success,” he said.

Post-graduation, he hopes to become a full-time basketball coach, starting at the high school level, where he can continue to influence student athletes in a positive way.

“My long-term goal is to coach basketball at a Class A institution like Milton Academy. Over the next three to four years, I aim to secure a head coaching position and school administrator role where I can build a competitive program focused on shaping young men,” he said.

Before then, he looks forward to standing in front of his peers, and, more importantly, his mom Brenda, father Michael, and the rest of his family, when he delivers his speech and collects his degree.

“Without losing my wallet, I would have never built the relationships I have on this campus and found my purpose,” Noah said. “I truly believe everything happens for a reason. When you move with passion and intention, things have a way of aligning. It was my destiny to be here."

Do you have a 91Ƶ story you'd like to share? Another time, she lacked the funds to complete a final year of classes.

Nevertheless, college remained in the back of her mind.
